New York City cooling centers are now open to give residents a break from the heat and high humidity. To find the nearest cooling center, call 311 or go to www.nyc.gov/oem. Cooling centers include senior centers, libraries and community centers.
To avoid heat exhaustion or the even more serious heat stroke, be sure to stay out of the sun, drink lots of water, wear light clothing and avoid strenuous exercise in the heat of the day. Symptoms of heat stroke include weakness and fainting, hot dry skin or cold clammy skin, trouble breathing, a rapid heartbeat and confusion, dizziness or disorientation. If you or someone you know is experiencing one or more of these symptoms, call 911 immediately.
